Chennai Egmore MS Railway Station

Chennai Egmore Railway Station, also called Chennai Ezhumbur, is one of Chennai’s most important railway stations after Chennai Central (MAS). This 118-year-old station is well-known for its Gothic-style building with large domes and corridors. The station is in Egmore, with its main entrance on Gandhi-Irwin Road and another entrance on Poonamallee High Road. 

It is an NSG-1 category station used by more than 1.5 lakh passengers and over 560 suburban, mail, and express trains daily. Chennai Egmore Station is often called the gateway to southern Tamil Nadu because it connects Chennai with Southern cities such as Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Rameswaram, and Kanniyakumari.

A paid AC waiting hall is available near Platform 4 at Chennai Egmore Railway Station. The station also has free non-AC waiting halls where you can wait for your train. 

• AC Lounge & Sleeping Pods

If you want to rest before your train, you can use the IRCTC AC Lounge on the first floor of Egmore Railway Station. Sitting access costs ₹50 for one hour, with sofas, recliners, and washrooms available. You can also use a sleeping pod for ₹170 for two hours. 

• Retiring Rooms

AC retiring rooms are available on the first floor near Platform 1 and can be booked through IRCTC. You need a confirmed or RAC train ticket and a valid government-issued ID to book a room.

• Cloak Room

The Egmore Railway Station cloak room is located near Platform 4. You can leave your luggage here for a few hours by paying a nominal amount for each bag stored. 

• Food and Drinking Water

There is an AAB Food Plaza near Platform 1. You can also find many smaller food stalls located near the waiting rooms selling idli, tea, vada, chips, and other packaged snacks.

There are currently 5 escalators at Egmore Railway Station. As part of the redevelopment, the station is planned to have 43 lifts and 29 escalators, making it easier for passengers to move between different levels and platforms.

• By Metro

Take the Green Line to Egmore Metro Station. From there, Egmore Railway Station is about a 3-minute walk away. 

• By Bus

You can take an MTC bus and get down at Egmore Bus Stand on Gandhi Irwin Road. From the bus stand, Chennai Egmore Railway Station is about a 5-minute walk away.

If you are arriving in Chennai by an intercity bus, your bus may stop at Koyambedu CMBT or Kilambakkam Bus Terminus. From there, you can take the Metro, an MTC bus, taxi or auto-rickshaw to reach Chennai Egmore.

• By Taxi

You can also take an app-based cab or regular taxis to reach the Chennai Egmore MS Station. If you are travelling with luggage, this is one of the easiest ways to reach Chennai Egmore.

• From Chennai Airport

You can take a taxi or a local bus from the Chennai International Airport. You can also take the Blue Line from the Chennai Airport Metro and switch to the Green Line at Alandur to arrive at the Egmore Metro Station.
